Karny Loopa Aka KarnyX says: "Don't bother with the Loreal Noirs Richesse line..I've tried it on natural hair and it did gives a nice color at first but faded in 2 weeks to a dark brown...Hard to bleach over it eventually and it dries the hair like hell...At least putting some red punky color on it solved the problem (My hair got somewhat porous with Loreal."

Darien says: "My hair does not lighten easily- it always takes at least two bleachings to reach very pale blond, even though my hair is only medium brown. Because two or three bleachings can really damage hair, I usually use Ultra Blue Lightener. Its a lot more expensive than bleach (about $10), but it does almost no damage (split ends, dryness, etc) to my hair. Application time is very long for me, and just to be safe, I usually only mix half of each ingredient first, saving the rest for later if needed. I only recommend doing that to those with short hair (otherwise, there may not be enough). Ultra Blue usually gets my hair almost as light as bleach can, but not enough for silver toners and other colourings that require super-light hair.
I'm a fan of blue (mostly because it suits me well; its not actually my favourite colour), but blues are notorious for turning green on yellowy hair (which is often as light as mine is willing to get sans-bleach). For people who have trouble with this, there is a solution. Special Effects blues will, from my experience, not turn out green. Better yet, they last a very long time. I don't know how I managed to do it, but I was once able to retain bright blue hair for two months with minimal fading! I have also used one of their purple shades, which lasted very long as well. The red did not seem as long-lasting, and became streaky. Beware though: Special Effects dye stains things more easily than most dyes I have used- especially tubs and sinks. Also, when dying the hair of a friend with teh same blue I use on my hair, the result was comparable to the ink of a black ballpoint pen (it was black, but in the light shined sort of purple- if you've ever looked closely at ballpoint ink, you'll know what I mean). We probably left it in her hair too long; I'm used to my own hair which takes quite a while to take the dye."

jess says: "Special Effects dyes dreadlocks much better than Manic Panic, and is easier to get off of skin. I had a terrible experience with Manic Panic pre-dreads, one in which I dyed my entire body hot pink...and my mothers newly finished white bath tub. Woops. Though Special Effects doesnt dye skin as badly as Manic Panic, it seems to be more permanent in hair (fades less quickly). Atomic Pink and the dark purple one are great mixed together."
